The European Commission has today announced their decision to continue funding the UNRWA and will also designate an additional €68m for other organisations providing emergency support to Palestinians across the region, Fine Gael MEP Maria Walsh has said.
The European Commission’s funding of the UNRWA will continue in three instalments, with the first package of €50m being paid to the agency next week. In addition, organisations such as the Red Cross and the Red Crescent will receive €68m in funding to provide life-saving humanitarian aid and support.
MEP Maria Walsh said:
“What is happening in Gaza today is nothing short of a genocide. The consistent and brutal violation of human rights must end – but it is obvious to us all that it will not end without meaningful and strong intervention from the most powerful players on the world stage.
“I welcome the European Commission’s announcement today that not only will they continue to fund the UNRWA, but they will give an extra €68m to other organisations providing life-saving humanitarian aid in Gaza and beyond.
“However, until we see a permanent ceasefire, more remains to be done. Our global leaders must continue doing everything they can until we see the protection of all citizens in Palestine. I echo the Irish Government’s calls for a review of the EU-Israel Association Agreement and urge that it be carried out as a matter of utmost priority.”
