Europe’s largest political group arrives in West of Ireland for EPP Summer University – MEP Maria Walsh

The European Parliament’s largest political group will arrive in the West of Ireland for three days of political discussions, study visits and cultural activities this week, welcomed by Fine Gael MEP Maria Walsh.

The Group of the European People’s Party (EPP) Summer University is taking place in Galway from June 10–12, and will bring together more than 100 politicians, MEPs and senior European political figures, including EPP President Manfred Weber. The group will arrive at Ireland West Airport, Co. Mayo and will visit Knock Shrine during their time in Ireland.

The group will also be joined by An Tánaiste and Minister for Finance, Simon Harris, and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Helen McEntee.

The theme of the event will focus on EU-US relations and trade, with Galway a hub for American investment in Ireland as highlighted by recently released employment figures. 18,963 people were employed by US companies in Galway in 2025, with the number rising to 27,149 for employment across Connaught and 218,377 nationally.

MEP Maria Walsh said:

“Galway, Mayo and the West of Ireland will be at the top of the European political agenda this week – a rare opportunity for our region.

“This is one of the largest political gatherings of MEPs to take place across the EU and it is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the region on the European stage as Ireland prepares to take over the EU Presidency.

“Right now in Brussels, MEPs are negotiating policies and funding which have a direct impact on the businesses, livelihoods and jobs of people across the West of Ireland. Many of the lead negotiators will visit Galway and the surrounding areas this week, allowing them to see firsthand the challenges and opportunities we face on the ground. I will ensure that when they return to Brussels, these unique insights into the West of Ireland are directly reflected in policy decisions.

“I look forward to welcoming MEPs when they arrive into Ireland West Airport in my home county of Mayo, and will be honoured to showcase the culture and history of Knock Shrine to the group during their visit.

“A major focus of the programme will be the future of EU-US relations, with Galway being uniquely positioned to host these discussions due to the city’s strong links with transatlantic trade. The West of Ireland has become a major hub for US investment, medtech innovation and international business. Figures recently shared with me highlight the scale of this investment; 18,963 people were employed by US companies in Galway in 2025 while this number rose to 27,149 for employment across Connaught.

“Decisions made in Brussels about EU-US trade have a direct and significant impact on the jobs and lives of people across our region. It is important their voices are heard by leading MEPs and negotiators.

“Regions like the West of Ireland have a vital role to play in Europe’s economic growth, innovation and political future. I look forward to welcoming colleagues from across Europe to Galway and showcasing everything our region has to offer.”
