West of Ireland to host top political gathering for EPP Summer University – MEP Maria Walsh

More than 100 politicians, MEPs, business leaders and policy experts from across Europe will travel to the West of Ireland this June, welcomed by Fine Gael MEP Maria Walsh.

The Group of the European People’s Party (EPP) Summer University takes place from June 10–12, and will bring senior European political figures, including EPP President Manfred Weber, to Galway. EU-US relations and transatlantic trade will form the core themes of the event, with discussions also focusing on Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Midlands-North-West MEP Maria Walsh said the Summer University will provide a major political and economic boost for Galway and the wider region.

MEP Maria Walsh said:

“I am incredibly proud to bring the EU’s largest political group to the West of Ireland, placing Galway at the top of the European political agenda. This is one of the largest political gatherings of MEPs to take place across the EU and it is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our region on the European stage. .

“Hosting more than 100 delegates from across Europe will deliver benefits for local businesses, hotels, restaurants and tourism operators, while also putting Galway at the centre of important European political discussions.

“MEPs leading negotiations in Brussels on key files and policies will travel for the event, allowing them to see firsthand the challenges and opportunities we face on the ground. This is a rare and significant occasion for the West of Ireland as the decisions these negotiators make in the European Parliament directly impact the lives and jobs of all in our region.

“A major focus of the programme will be the future of EU-US relations and strengthening transatlantic cooperation. Galway is uniquely positioned to host these discussions due to our region’s strong links with transatlantic trade.

“The West of Ireland has become a major hub for US investment, medtech innovation and international business. We have world-class companies, research institutions and entrepreneurs operating here and it is fitting that conversations on Europe’s transatlantic future are taking place in Galway.

“The event will also focus on Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union; an important opportunity for us to shape the future direction of Europe. My priorities will include securing a strong Common Agricultural Policy that supports farmers and rural communities, advancing gender equality across the European Union and ensuring mental health remains a core political priority at EU level.

“The future of Europe is not shaped only in Brussels or national capitals. Regions like Galway and the West of Ireland have a vital role to play in Europe’s economic growth, innovation and political future. I look forward to welcoming colleagues from across Europe to Galway and showcasing everything our region has to offer.”
